The concept of “Children in Motion” was chosen as a theme for the new Buerger Center for Advanced Pediatric Care at CHOP. Metcalfe was engaged to bring this idea to life through a robust collection of environmental graphics. By selecting over two hundred larger-than-life photographs, Metcalfe created a vibrant assortment of imagery used in elevator lobbies, check in desks and each and every exam room. The graphics serve not only as extraordinary artwork – they are used as tools as well. Bold, oversized graphics are used as purposeful distraction from intimidating exam room machinery. These images are also integrated into the wayfinding elements. Floor directories feature iconic images along with directional information for added visual cues and each exam room identifier contains a separate photograph to help parents recall in which room their child is being seen.
